The word business is derived from the word "busy" and it is the state of being busy, the opposite of laziness. keeping oneself active at any time and state is business. Now, you will agree that business basically means being active in any kind of work or job taken at any moment.
However, business in general mean exchange of any product of commodity for money or any consideration in big volumes. Then the basic meaning will move to 'selling or marketing' of commercial goods needed by people. Hence, business is transacting big volumes of products to generate money. Money is employed in business in various places.
Production is business
Manufacturing of goods with the composition of raw materials, manual or machine based labor and technology is considered business. You can make any thing needed by the people as raw material,semi finished, fully produced, assembled in any form, solid, liquid or gases. This could be based on food and agriculture, or engineering and industry. The products could be any thing from those beads and shells freely available on the sea shore or to that is mined and processed like gold and diamonds too.
They could be love birds that give pleasures to the on lookers. they could be flying machines of any kind, left to your imagination.
Distribution is business:
Business becomes worth highly valuable to the society only when it composes distribution as its main agenda. Selling and marketing are components of any business, if you want the production should go unstopped. Production of goods needed to the society will reach their destination only when the distributor channels are busy and active.
Service is business:
You will agree all the products except consumables need 'attention and care' and thus an industry called service industry is making a big show in the business world. Providing good after sale service or helping people to keep the products and machines useful for a longer period becomes more valuable. The business of service is not limited to repairs and service alone. it has excellent opportunity with a wider scope in providing non material services.
Helping the people in every way and every where to save their time money and energy at a cost by providing a service is a real and highly remunerative business.
People is Business
In business, prime thing is people and the ultimate is also people. The people constitute the major factor in building a business. They are the root cause of business growth. Their needs and satisfaction are the two things make any commodity viable.

"What is business?"
All answers given by the hubbers have their respective siginifcance and value. What I would submit is that in Islam, business is the lawful manner of earning livelihood whereby the dignity of mankind is maintained. All humans are dependent while their Creator is All Independent. It is He who has declared in the holy Qur'an:
"Those who live on ususry will not rise up before Allah except like those who are driven to madness by the touch of Satan. That is because they claim: "Trading is no different than ususr, but Allah has made trading lawful and ususry unlawful. He who has received the admomnition from his Lord and has mended his way keep his previous gains: Allah will be his Judge. Those who turn back, they shall be the inmates of Hell fire where in they will live forever. Allah has laid curse on usury and blessed charity to propser. Allah does not love ungrateful sinner. [2: 275 and 276]
All economic activity is business, whether it is sole proprietorship, partnership, company, exchange, trade, commerce, industry, agriculture, manufacture, services, sales, purchase, etc. The only care needed is that Profit and loss is to be honestly shared, services are to be properly and duly compensated, but usury is to be avoided.Fraud of any kind is forbidden. Option of examination and return of goods within a specific time in case of any defect has been provided. Mutual consent is the soul of all business contracts.
